Exam Review Session notes

P. Conrad

Here are a few suggested ground rules for review sessions: Do:
  1. Do focus your questions on the material: C programming, Unix commands, and computer science. Don't ask about exam or grading policies or about the projects; that's not what today is for.
  2. Do ask questions about material you don't understand. For example: "I don't understand the difference between pass by reference and pass by value. Can you help me understand that better?"
  3. Do ask the professor to work an exam question from a previous exam that you didnt' understand.
  4. Do invite the professor to "give us a sample question about topic X" (e.g. can you give us an example question about the strncpy function?)
Dont:
  1. Don't ask: are you going to ask about "x" on the exam? Just ask the professor to explain what you don't understand about x.
  2. Don't ask: what's going to be on the exam. Your instructors have already posted that.
  3. Don't ask "is the exam going to be comprehensive". The answer is yes, but it will emphasize more the later material.
  4. Don't ask "what kind of questions should we expect on the exam?" You've already had two exams: you can expect similar kinds of questions.
  5. Don't ask "is the exam going to be harder or easier than the previous exam?" That depends on how well you prepare; if you prepare more, it will be eaier, if you prepare less, it will be harder.
  6. Don't ask "are we allowed to use a notes sheet or calculator"? Your instructor already covered that.
  7. Don't ask "when will we know our final grade". You'll know your final grade when it is posted.
