In 2006, after nearly two decades of the brutal civil war, the African nation of Liberia inaugurated the country’s first elected female president and Africa’s first freely elected female head of state, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. A Harvard-educated economist and grandmother of eight who had been exiled to Nigeria and nicknamed the “Iron Lady”, Johnson-Sirleaf faced enormous obstacles in rebuilding a war-torn country. |

Some view Obama’s election as a permanent break from the racial divisions that have plagued our nation throughout its history. Others believe that as significant as the election may have been, it will not resolve the racial disparities that burden the lives of African Americans and other racial minorities. This day-long symposium will include several panel discussions, and a keynote from 12 -1:30 pm by Jabari Asim, Editor in Chief of Crisis, the magazine of the NAACP, and author of the soon to be released Harper/Collins book What does Obama mean? For more information, please visit www.bams.udel.edu. |

Black History Month Extravaganza Jeffrey Johnson is a social activist, political strategist, inspirational speaker, and architect for social change. Upon graduation from the University of Toledo, Johnson became National Director of the NAACP’s Youth and College Division, and later, Vice President for Russell Simmons’ Hip Hop Summit Action Network. Johnson furthered his reputation as a positive force among youth and young adults through his politically conscious television personality, “Cousin Jeff” on BET’s Rap City and the Jeff Johnson Chronicles, a show he hosted and produced. As a journalist, Johnson has interviewed Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Africa’s first female head of state and Liberia’s first female president. A pre-lecture workshop entitled, Student Leaders of Color on Predominately White College Campuses will be held at 4:30 pm in Trabant Multipurpose Room C. Jeff Johnson will lead a discussion on the perils and pitfalls many students of color face on predominately white college campuses and offer strategies for achieving success . |
