| Myrlie Evers-Williams is the widow of slain civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, and former chairperson of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP, 1995-1998). Her positive reputation among civil rights activists, as a significant player in advancing social justice causes, made her election a chance for renewed optimism among NAACP supporters. Since ending her role as the chairperson of the NAACP, Evers-Williams has pursued other causes; in particular, she started the Medgar Evers Institute to promote education, training, and economic development.
