CBC Historical & Cultural Excursion: MLK Memorial Bus Trip
Washington, DC
9:00 am - 7:00 pm

MLK was a mentor, educator, and inspiration to many. His efforts spawned the Civil Rights Movement which ultimately led to the advancement of black and brown people everywhere. In celebration of his life and legacy, we will visit the recently completed Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. We will also visit the Smithsonian Museum where participants may attend various exhibits and historical reenactments which include: The Student Sit-Ins at the Greensboro Lunch Counter, The Time Trial of John Brown, and La Buena Vida. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian Latino Center. The bus will depart from the Center for Black Culture at 9:00 am and depart from Washington, DC at 5:00 pm.

Tickets go on sale, Monday through Friday, September 12-22, from noon until 5:30 pm in the CBC.  : $15 UD Students w/ ID; $25 UD Faculty, Staff and Alumni.

Transform Your Life with Tyrese Gibson

Tyrese Gibson is well known for his starring roles in the films, Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Transformers, and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon. In his new memoir, How To Get Out of Your Own Way, Tyrese hopes to inspire readers to pursue their dreams and not let life's obstacles get in the way. In this lecture, Tyrese will share life lessons and how his mentor, Will Smith, helped him overcome his chaotic childhood by believing in him when he didn't believe in himself.

An Evening with America Ferrera

Emmy Award-winning actress America Ferrera is best known for her portrayal of “Betty Suarez” on ABC’s hit show Ugly Betty.  Ferrera has also starred in a number of hit films including, Real Women Have Curves, How to Train a Dragon, Our Family Wedding, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  In 2011 Ferrera was the recipient of the Global Action Award for Childhood Development and Education for her work with Save the Children in Mali and the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy Award for her commitment to helping underprivileged families and youth. Ferrara’s talk will focus on the importance of education and mentoring.
