The Power of One: Perspectives on Mentoring

CBC Historical and Cultural Excursion: MLK Memorial Bus Trip
Washington, DC
9:00 am – 7:00 pm

MLK was a mentor, educator, and inspiration to many. His efforts spawned the Civil Rights Movement which ultimately led to the advancement of black and brown people everywhere. In celebration of his life and legacy, we will visit the recently completed Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. We will also visit the Smithsonian Museum where participants may attend various exhibits and historical reenactments which include: The Student Sit-Ins at the Greensboro Lunch Counter, The Time Trial of John Brown, and La Buena Vida. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian Latino Center.

 

The bus will depart from the Center for Black Culture at 9:00 am and depart from Washington, DC at 5:00 pm.


Tickets go on sale, Monday through Friday, September 12-22, from noon until 5:30 pm in the CBC.  $15 UD Students w/ ID; $25 UD Faculty, Staff and Alumni. FLEX will be available.

Voices Across Generations

A panel of faculty, staff, and students, past and present, will discuss the Latino experience at the University of Delaware over the years. The goals for this program are to welcome the incoming class of 2015 and to share insights on ways to more successfully recruit and retain members of this community.

Food has historically been the bridge to connect people from various backgrounds. 
This festival boasts traditional dishes from several countries including, Argentina, Cuba, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain.  The festival will continue on October 13th, for dinner only, in Russell and Pencader.

Real Women Have Curves - Film

Free and open to the public

This film is the story of Ana, a first generation Mexican-American high school student, who lives in Los Angeles with her financially struggling family. Ana dreams of going to college to improve her life. However, her parents want her to stay home to work. Her teacher Mr. Guzman, on the other hand, urges her to go to college and arranges for her acceptance into one of the best colleges in the country. What will Ana Do? How will Ana balance the conflicting cultural values of the American middle class with the traditional values of her family?

A discussion on the challenges many Latina/o students face while in pursuit of education will follow the film.

Latino Heritage Month Extravaganza
An Evening with America Ferrera

Emmy Award-winning actress America Ferrera is best known for her portrayal of “Betty Suarez” on ABC’s hit show Ugly Betty.  Ferrera has also starred in a number of hit films including, Real Women Have Curves, How to Train a Dragon, Our Family Wedding, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  In 2011 Ferrera was the recipient of the Global Action Award for Childhood Development and Education for her work with Save the Children in Mali and the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy Award for her commitment to helping underprivileged families and youth.

Ferrara’s talk will focus on the importance of education and mentoring.

Celebrate Latino Heritage Month by dancing the night away to live music with Latin band, La Insaciable.  The night wouldn’t be complete without a chance to indulge in some traditional food.  Free and open to the public.
