Disability Insurance

Non-Exempt Staff (Salaried and Hourly)

Through the State of Delaware and Hartford Insurance Company eligible participants in the State Employee's Pension Plan are provided income protection during periods of short-term or long-term disability.

If illness, pregnancy, or injury of a temporary nature causes absence from work for more than 30 days, eligible employees may apply for benefits directly with the Hartford. If approved employees may receive 75% of their base salary for up to 182 days under the short term disability insurance plan (this includes the waiting period). Employees disabled for more than 182 days may further apply for long term disability benefits with the Hartford. If approved employees may receive 60% of their base salary if they have selected the standard option or 66 2/3 % of their base salary if they have selected the high option.

There is no cost to the employee for the standard option ($8,000 maximum monthly benefit as of July 1, 2007). Employees may choose the high option and pay the difference between the University's contribution for the standard option and the cost of the high option. An option can be changed only during the flexible benefits enrollment period or if the employee has a qualifying life event as defined in the Flexible Benefits Book.

Individuals should advise their supervisors if unable to work due to illness, pregnancy, or injury and provide medical certification of their disabling condition. The Employee should contact the Hartford at 1-866-945-7781 to initiate their claim.
