The Blue & Gold Club has been the University
of Delaware’s fine dining, members-only restaurant since 1971, but the building’s
rich history dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century.
Built in 1926, the Georgian mansion was once
owned by Mr. & Mrs. E. Brinton Wright and was donated to the University in 1966. Prior to the
Club’s opening, the building also served as a temporary administrative office, a women’s residence hall and student infirmary during
the renovation of other buildings on campus.
Establishing a fine dining restaurant on campus
in 1971 was the work of former UD President,
Dr. E. Arthur Trabant. Dr. Trabant and John A. Hodgson ’37, then Assistant Vice President of Business Affairs, formed an eight-member
committee to formalize a constitution, hire
staff, choose the Club’s name and conduct
a membership campaign.
During its nearly four decades of operation,
the Blue & Gold Club has undergone many renovations to enhance service to the University community, while preserving the beauty and
classical ambience of the original structure.
