The Art History Visual Resources Collection is the primary teaching resource for Art History faculty, consisting of a collection of over 350,000 bound and fully catalogued 35mm slides. The collection covers architecture, painting, sculpture, graphics and decorative arts from pre-historic times to the modern era. Although the collection originally focused on Western European and traditional American art history, it has grown to include non-Western arts such as Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Tibetan, sub-Saharan and Nilotic African arts, and Islamic arts. The collection also embraces photography and graphic design and contemporary developments in video/performance art and sculpture/installation art. It also reflects current interests in women's art, so-called "outsider art," and African-American painting and sculpture. A small collection of important reference materials such as Benezit's Dictionnaire des Peintres et Sculpteurs, the Encyclopedia of World Art, the Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architecture, foreign language dictionaries and various handbooks support staff and user research.
