November 24, 1743 - The opening of Francis Alison's "Free School" in New London, PA, was announced in the Pennsylvania Gazette. The University of Delaware traces its origin to this school.

November 10, 1769 - The Academy of Newark, descended from the free school established by Francis Alison in 1743, formally chartered by the colonial government.

February 5, 1833 - "An Act to Establish a College at Newark" passed by the Delaware General Assembly

May 8, 1834 - Newark College opened

February 7, 1843 - Name changed to Delaware College

March 30, 1859 - Delaware College closed

September 29, 1869 - Academy of Newark separated from Delaware College.

September 14, 1870 - Delaware College Reopened as Delaware's Land Grant College

July 2, 1872 - Coeducation Established

June 24, 1885 - Coeducation Abolished

March 31, 1913 - Affiliated Women's College created by act of the Delaware General Assembly

September 15, 1914 - Women's College opened

March 28, 1921 - An Act of the Delaware General Assembly created the University of Delaware with two colleges - Delaware College and the Women's College

July 7, 1923 - The first Foreign Study group traveled to France.

July 1, 1945 - Administrative reorganization created Schools of Arts and Science, Agriculture, Engineering, Education, Home Economics, leading to the complete merger of the Women's College of Delaware and the establishment of coeducation, allowing women to enroll in all programs.

August 14, 1950 - Racial desegregation ended, allowing African-Americans to enroll in all programs.

June 8, 1963 - School of Business and Economics established

July 1, 1965 - Schools of the University became Colleges

June 11, 1966 - College of Nursing established

June 6, 1970 - College of Marine Studies established

May 18, 1976 - University designated a Sea Grant College

May 27, 1976 - College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy established

January 1, 1978 - College of Home Economics renamed College of Human Resources

December 10, 1980 - College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation established

February 1, 1991 - University designated a Space Grant College

May 1, 1995 - University designated an Urban Grant College

July 1, 1997 - College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation and the College of Nursing merged to form the College of Health and Nursing Sciences

July 1, 1997 - The College of Education, the College of Human Resources and the College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy merged to form the College of Human Resources, Education, and Public Policy
