Beatrice Hartshorn

(1897-1972)

Beatrice Hartshorn played a key role in the development of Women's Physical Education at the University of Delaware. She received her B.S. from Syracuse University in 1923. In 1925, she joined the Women's College at the University of Delaware as Chair of Physical Education, a post she held until 1962. During a brief leave of absence in 1934, Hartshorn earned an M.S. in Health and Physical Education from the Teachers College at Columbia University.

Hartshorn was a great proponent of Women's athletics, particularly at the intramural level. During her tenure at the University, participation in Women's Physical Education was nearly 100%. She founded the May Day celebration, which included a May Court, Pageants and festivities. In 1974, the gymnasium of the Women's College was renamed in her honor. This facility currently serves as the home of the Professional Theatre Training Program.
