Delaware Chapter ASA

Dinner Meeting: October 2013

Note:

Meeting location: Townsend Hall on the University of Delaware campus -- Commons Area. Townsend Hall

Speaker:   Sergei Leonov
Senior Principal Scientist at AstraZeneca, Wilmington, DE
Title:
Optimal Experimental Design in Drug Development

Abstract:

We discuss the application of optimal experimental model-based design at various stages of drug development. The common goals of experimental design -- such as reducing costs, supporting efficient decision making, and gaining maximum information under various constraints -- are often the same across diverse applied areas. Ethical and regulatory aspects play a much more prominent role in medical and pharmaceutical research. Some of these issues will be addressed in the talk.

Biography:

Sergei Leonov has M.Sc. with honors in Applied Mathematics from Moscow State (Lomonosov) University and Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from the Institute for Systems Analysis, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. Currently he is Senior Principal Scientist at AstraZeneca, Wilmington, DE. Prior to joining AZ, he was with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Modeling and Simulation (Cambridge, MA) and GlaxoSmithKline, Research Statistics Unit (Collegeville, PA, 12 years), and has worked, among other projects, on adaptive designs for nonlinear models, dose-response modeling, optimal design in bioassays, optimization of sampling times for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) studies. Prior to joining the pharma industry, Sergei worked in academia (Institute for Systems Analysis, Moscow, and University of Southern California, Los Angeles). His research interests include stochastic approximation, nonparametric statistical estimation and smoothing, optimal experimental design for nonlinear models and statistical computing.

Sergei published one book, "Optimal Design for Nonlinear Response Models", with Valerii Fedorov (CRC Press/Chapman & Hall, 2013, Boca Raton, FL, http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781439821510) and over 50 papers in peer reviewed international journals and collections of invited papers.
