Title:   Statistical Engineering

Abstract:

Statistical Engineering, as proposed by Roger Hoerl and Ron Snee is the study of how to best utilize statistical concepts, methods, and tools and integrate them with information technology and other related sciences to generate improved results (Hoerl and Snee, 2010). This is a topic that I have read a lot about recently (The American Statistician, Quality Engineering, presented by Snee at the ASQ Winter Symposium in 2010, etc.) and has gotten a bit of attention at DuPont. It is a term coined by Roger Hoerl and Ron Snee. There was a session about it at JSM 2010 and some are planned for JSM 2011. I will outline some of the basic concepts presented in Hoerl and Snee's articles and some of the comments that I have heard and read about it, and the potential impact this may have on statistics education and the practice of statistics.
