Title: Personalized Medicine and Model-based Drug Development: Opportunities for Biomedical Informatics.
Zhaohui Cai, MD, PhD, will discuss the potentials of biomedical informatics in enabling personalized medicine in clinical drug development with real case scenarios. Personalized medicine seems to be based on the recognition that unprecedented types of information will be obtainable by the application of genetic, genomic, proteomic, imaging, etc, technologies, which will help us further refine known diseases into unknown categories. In drug development, personalized medicine has promised to stratify patient populations based on treatment effectiveness and safety, and therefore deliver more targeted therapies and safer medicines.
However, the wide application of the new technologies to clinical trials has not come to reality in the pharmaceutical industry for all kinds of reasons, such as limitations in trial designs, extra cost and time, and uncertainly in regulatory and commercial consequences. This presentation will focus on a reasonable step we are taking, which is modeling and simulation using currently available clinical data from historical and early phase clinical trials to enable patient stratification and novel designs in late phase clinical trials, without applying any new technologies. Real examples of modeling applied to drug projects will be illustrated and the value of such a practical approach will be discussed.
Zhaohui (John) Cai, PhD is a Director at AstraZeneca supporting Therapeutic Areas and Patient Safety in Clinical Development. He received his MD from China Medical University, PhD from Albany Medical College, and Biomedical Informatics Fellowship training from Harvard Medical School. At AstraZeneca, John is also the US region coordinator of modeling and simulation in Statistics and Informatics. He has been involved in data mining, text mining, as well as providing modeling support to drug projects and safety knowledge groups.
