Delaware Chapter, ASA
Dinner Meeting: March 2008
Notice: Our meetings are located at the Blue and Gold Club Tavern on the University of Delaware campus. The schedule of meetings for Spring 2008 is set. See our Vice President's letter summarizing the meetings and offering words of praise and encouragement. Also see a very nice summary of our Fall 2007 meetings along with photos of our speakers.

Title: Whole genome association mapping in maize
Molecular markers are now an integral part of many plant breeding programs to improve yield and disease resistance in crops. To characterize genetic diversity in maize approximately 10,000 markers have been resequenced in a set of 600 diverse, elite inbred varieties from several heterotic groups. Almost 9000 of these markers have been mapped by linkage analysis and by BAC sequencing. Cluster analysis of the single nucleotide polymorphism data for the markers shows that the inbreds can be separated into distinct genetic groups. Results from whole genome association mapping studies for several traits have allowed us to identify regions of the genome that contribute to phenotype. The fine structure of the genome scans reflects the underlying linkage disequilibrium between markers.
Stanley D. Luck received his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1987 from the University of British Columbia. He postdoc'd in Physics at the University of Illinois, and was a Research Associate in Biophysics at the Fox Chase Cancer Center. He is currently a biostatistician with DuPont Crop Genetics Research at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE. His research interests include statistical genetics and regression.
