Dinner Meeting: March 2007
Notice: Our meetings are located at the Blue and Gold Club Tavern on the University of Delaware campus.
Abstract:
Speaker: Dr. Woollcott Smith
Department of Business Statistics
Temple UniversityTitle: Looking for multidimensional holes, undiscovered species and new Googlewhacks I will present three nonstandard problems that can be attacked with classical statistical methods.
The first example is the search for holes, or missing data, in a k-dimensional data set. These holes are nearly impossible to detect using standard graphical and data analysis methods. A modification of the mixture of normals model yields both a conceptual model for holes and a way to display k-dimensional data holes in a two-dimensional plot.
In the second example, standard distribution results are used to estimate the number of as yet undiscovered large marine species.
On the lighter side, we show how size-biased sampling ideas and general linear models can be applied to devise efficient search strategies for new Googlewhacks.
