Topic:	The U.S. Economy Today

Abstract:

The talk will address several questions that are being asked by all who are concerned about what is going on in the economy today:

• Are we in a recession now?
• How are recessions defined and measured? (This will be a little technical, but might be of interest to this particular audience.)
• What causes recessions?
• What policy measures are appropriate in recessions? (With particular reference to the present situation.)
• What is the outlook for the remainder of 2001 and 2002? ("Recession," "soft landing," "bumpy landing," "slowdown," "slump." You name it -- lots of interesting possibilities to discuss.)
