“Weight Loss Disparities among Black and White Women – Twenty
Years of Clinic Partnerships, Research Recruitment, Enrollment, Randomization,
and Outcomes” - NiCole Keith, Ph.D., FACSM Professor and Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
Since 1990, and all recent randomized trials have resulted
in Black women losing 50% weight when compared to white women. Additionally, 60%
of Black Women are obese when compared to 39% of white women. Dr. Keith has
dedicated her career to identify reasons for weight loss disparities and
potential solutions. In this presentation she will discuss her formal
intervention training as a post-doc in the 1990’s, her first attempt at
conducting an intervention independently through community based participatory
research, her work with programs that have been her research focus for the last
20 years, and trends that have been discovered over that have led to her
current research pursuits. Pitfalls and progress as a student, junior faculty
member, and in her current roll will be discussed throughout the presentation. She
will conclude with current research and future plans for community-based weight
loss research.
